Effects of Sleep Deprivation

Was surfing around and looking at my friend's blog. I was horrified to find that she often goes without sleep for a few nights in a row. Tsk tsk, young people nowadays do not know how to take care of themselves. Apparently they do not know the harmful effects of sleep deprivation. Haha so I did some research and specially created this post for those nocturnal creatures...gers especially. Yes, I am trying to scare these people!! Hahaha =P

As the pace of life quickens and it becomes harder to balance home and work, many people meet their obligations by getting less sleep. Sleep deprivation is a general lack of the necessary amount of sleep. Sleep deprivation can adversely affect brain function and impairs spatial learning. Animal studies suggest that sleep deprivation increases stress hormones, which may reduce new cell production in adult brains. In the United States sleep deprivation is common with students due to the fact that almost all schools begin early in the morning, forcing students to get less sleep than they normally would. Because of this, their grades go down and their concentration is impaired.

Other effects of sleep deprivation include
Irritability
Blurred vision
Slurred speech
Memory lapses / memory loss
Hallucinations
Feeling deprived of sleep
Hand tremors
Headache
Color blindness
Fainting
Nausea
Psychosis
Clinical depression
Pale skin tone (looking pasty)
Decreased mental activity
Decreased concentration
Decreased ability for the immune system to fight off sickness
Weight gain
Increased blood pressure
Aching muscles
Impatience
Slowed reaction time
Hypertension/Hyperactivity
Dizziness

Scary right?!! For those who wish to lose weight and do not want to look haggard at the age of 30, better sleep more from now on. Girls especially because it is a known fact that girls tend to age faster than guys. =P

Haha that is if you are staying awake to do some serious work such as exercising. If not, sleep deprivation will result in weight gain. 2 reasons - 1) Slower metabolism rate 2) Most people will resort to eating to stay awake. =)
